Owlin' Around

Posted by Beth Kane on September 30, 2015 at 12:05 AM

This is the first large project that I have done with my new Razertip Woodburner - it's a generously- sized wood-quilted owl serving tray.  I had such a wonderful time with the henna detailing that I guess I got a little carried away, because my family has not seen me in quite a while!  This is absorbing and very time consuming work, but how gratifying!  It was a true joy to create!  Scroll down for more pictures of the process and final product.

The Right Tool for the Job!

Posted by Beth Kane on September 29, 2015 at 11:55 AM

I have been having a wonderful time with my pyrography work now that I have added a new tool to my tool box - a Razertip woodburner.  This tool has dozens if not hundreds of optional tips that allow for an extremely high level of detail!  I can also adjust the temperature of the woodburning pen to control shading and contrast more effectively.  There are still my jobs that are best done with my good ol' Walnut Hollow woodburner, which is a classic, but having both tools at my disposal opens up a world of options!

Crafts in the Park

Westwood NJ's Crafts in the Park was a wonderful time!!!
Thanks so much to everyone who came out in the impressive heat!
I hope you enjoyed yourselves even half as much as I did!

My Favorite Song, Wood-Quilted!

Posted by Beth Kane on September 1, 2015 at 7:10 PM

If there are any Country Music fans out there I know you must be familiar with Tim McGraw's "Meanwhile Back at Mama's".  What a song!  For me it is magical, and captures everything I love about country life in its chorus.

I could not resist the opportunity to put the beautiful imagery into a wood-quilted piece.  Here is my illustration of the line, "Where I come from only the horses run - When the day is done, we take it easy."

For those of you who are not familiar with the song, here is a link to it - it;'s really worth a listen! (If the link doesn't work right just cut and paste it into your browser - it's worth it!)

_______________________________________________________

These days I am preparing for the annual Thursday Night Lights events in historic downtown Flemington!

I am so very thrilled to be a part of this fantastic series - local musicians, artists, and foodies all gather on 4 summer nights in downtown Flemington to kick up their heals, display their talents, and celebrate summertime!

The festivities start next Thursday!

Come on down and stroll the streets as the merriement will be dripping from porches, restaurants, shops, and park tents, all for the sheer enjoyment of it all!

See you there!

Serendipity Spoons - Something Sweet & New!

Posted by Beth Kane on July 2, 2015 at 5:40 PM

Something Sweet & New -

Frolic's Serendipity Sugar Spoons!

With a pretty little image on the front and a thoughtful phrase on the back, they're both beautiful and smart!

I make them in many varieties, with lots of clever wit and wisdom to ponder as you sip your tea!

I love these little guys, and customers seem to enjoy them too!
I call them "Serendipity Spoons" because they are the result of a happy accident! I was in a hurry to replenish my stock of wooden cooking spoons to burn, and I ordered the wrong size by mistake!  Oh, did I laugh when the tiny little box of 50 spoons arrived at my door!
It's not quite pennicilin, but it's a serendipitous situation just the same!

Here's a link to some interesting books about mistakes that turned out really well:

And now, the Owl!

Posted by Beth Kane on June 28, 2015 at 5:25 PM

Now that I have "gone with the grain" for yesterday's sunrise spoon, it's time for the owl to have his day!

He was worth the wait!

Go with the Flow...

Posted by Beth Kane on June 27, 2015 at 5:10 PM

Go with the Flow... or in this case, the grain!

I was all set to make an owl spoon today, but the grain of the wood was so perfedt for a concentric circle pattern that I decided to see where it led...

A couple of hours of pyrographed doodles later...

... and it turns out the spoon wanted to be a sunrise instead!

Go with the flow, go with the grain... however you say it, it's usually a good idea!
